This fund is a great way for individuals and companies to encourage members of the Spirit of Newark, Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps to strive to do better in school and at the same time continue to experience the wholesome and comprehensive benefits of drum and bugle corps.
Background
The Spirit of Newark is the only DCI touring corps that hails from the inner city. The art of drum and bugle corps is not only a unique and effective deterrent to gangs, violence and juvenile delinquency for minority youth, but also and attractive and successful way to show them the "outside" / "real" world

The Spirit of Newark desperately needs drum corps fans, friends, and foes alike help in order to survive this season. Being the only DCI national touring corps in America from an inner city, serving predominately minority youth, the Spirit of Newark does not raise much money from its poor, disadvantaged marching members. The City of Newark, New Jersey does not help us (see Star Ledger article "Dispirited Newark Corps Plays Blue Tune, July 8, 2006, even though the Newark Municipal Council started and funded the corps in 1991.
It costs more than $1500 per youngster to operate eleven months of the year. We are lucky if a youngster can raise $200. Furthermore, most of our instruments and uniforms are older than many of our members. Even our drum sticks, drum heads and keyboard mallets are remnants of past years.
We are asking for your help in any way possible - yes times are tough for everyone - so you can imagine how tough it is in the inner city!

Spirit DCA Corps 2010
The Spirit of Newark will field a DCA corps this year as well as a DCI corps. The cost will be $250 and will include transportation to 3 shows and the DCA Championships in Rochester NY.

At Spirit of Newark something amazing is about to happen, in fact, it's already started. Last years' corps was the best of the past three years. Now we are looking to do something that no other corps, especially a corps from an inner city, has ever done. But, we can't reveal that right here. You'll have to come down to the corps rehearsal and find out for yourself. So for now, we all have a lot of practicing to do this winter, stay focused- keep working HARD!
