Spirit of Newark / New Jersey
Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps
_______________________________________________________
Welcome to the SPIRIT OF NEWARK/NEW JERSEY, Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps!!!!
The SPIRIT OF NEWARK/NEW JERSEY is a DCI Open Class (DIV II / III) summer touring corps based in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We have expanded our operations to several locations throughout Newark and North New Jersey to attract more members and improve the corps.
The Summer Competition Corps will be member supported with outside donations. Our goal is to give our Competition Corps members the best possible drum corps experience with a full DCI Open Class Tour Schedule at the lowest price possible!!! Due to rising costs of running our drum corps in 08, our tour fees will be formatted differently than in the past. We will still have some of the lowest tour fees in Open Class. In this day and age that is not an easy task!!! But with your commitment and dedication, the SPIRIT OF NEWARK/NEW JERSEY will become all you want it to be!!
In anticipation, be prepared for long, intense rehearsals every time you come and you will be rewarded with a creative, but demanding show and a high level of personal achievement. Each time you perform, you will need to step it up a notch!! Be ready to practice at a higher level of intensity and you will achieve a higher level of performance and technique.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE????
Best Wishes,
Executive Director

Our entire schedule is built upon time flexibility. Your time is valuable. Everyone needs to practice to improve. We are also aware that many members come to the corps lacking certain skills. This year we will help everyone to be better prepared by utilizing their time to achieve maximum results.
Now we created our flexible schedule to accommodate experienced Band and /or Drum Corps members who have to travel some distance (more than one hour!) to make our rehearsals. However, their prior marching experience makes All – Day Rehearsal more practical and quite cost – effective.
The SPIRIT OF NEWARK/ NEW JERSEY is well aware of the demands and pressures put on today’s youth. Everyone’s personal schedule is so packed with deadlines and “work due yesterday” that drum and bugle corps participation needs to be able to fit in and not dominate those schedules.
So, because our schedule is flexible, every member will be able to attend most rehearsals and, thusly, will get the maximum benefit possible. And by attending every rehearsal, each member will grow not only in the technical performance of their instrument but also in their personal life – responsibility, self-discipline, accountability, teamwork, confidence, and self-esteem.
All we ask our members to do is come to practice with an open mind for new possibilities, a consistent, positive attitude to overcome obstacles, and a deep passion and respect for the SPIRIT OF NEWARK/NEW JERSEY and the drum corps activity.
Our membership is quite diverse. Now that we are recruiting for the first time outside of Newark, many new opportunities for cross-cultural and capacity building are available in this corps while they remain limited in other corps. We hope that our diversity will be one of the keys to our success.
Most importantly, your continued, on – time attendance is extremely critical and basic for our immediate success. Your commitment is what we thrive on.
For WINTER / SPRING INDOOR REHEARSALS, members should wear comfortable and warm clothes.
Bring: a water bottle, pens and paper, music, mouthpieces, drumsticks, etc.
For SPRING / SUMMER OUTDOOR REHEARSALS, members should be ready for all types of weather: cold, warm, or brutally hot. Bring rain gear, and an extra set of clothing and socks / shoes. Though cold drinking water will be available at rehearsals, members must bring their own water bottle.
The corps breaks for lunch or dinner when appropriate. We suggest that members pack a cooler full of food, drinks, fruits, etc. This is more affordable for members and gives them a chance to rest instead of running around to fast food restaurants. It also ensures that rehearsals can resume on time.
For COMPETITION WEEKENDS: As above for SPRING / SUMMER OUTDOOR REHEARSALS, but add: a sleeping bag, extra clothes and underwear, shower and personal items, soap, towel, deodorant.
CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING REHEARSAL! PLEASE MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE AN AUTHORIZED BREAK.
.
The complete TOUR FEE is $500. Beginning January 19, you must pay $100 a month or pay $50 per rehearsal. Tour fee must be paid in full by May 23. By paying per rehearsal, you will be able to pay the TOUR FEE a little at a time and not put a hole in your pocket. If you can not afford the tour fee, we offer a Sponsor Letter to help raise the needed funds. TWO OR MORE MEMBERS FROM ONE FAMILY PAY ONLY ONE TOUR FEE!!!
The TOUR FEE is used to offset expenses, such as food, practice and sleeping facilities, insurance, etc., when the corps is traveling, i.e., on COMPETITION WEEKENDS and on the DCI TOUR and must be paid to DCI before the season starts. The TOUR FEE is therefore, not refundable for any reason.
The SPIRIT OF NEWARK/ NEW JERSEY Tour Fee is less than half of what other area corps charge! The two main reasons why this is true are – corporate donations and the corps is readily available for Parades (unlike most corps). We currently have 4 (four) Parade dates on our Schedule.
ALL TOUR FEES ARE DUE BY THE MAY 23 CAMP!!
There are many other expenses for which we need and solicit donations: instruments, uniforms, equipment repair, flags, vehicle repairs, etc. Please contact the Director if someone would like to make a donation.
There is a mandatory $20 per rehearsal or camp. This offsets the costs food and instructors during the year, which, if you’ve ever paid for private music teachers, can get quite expensive. If there is a balance due on per camp fee or tour fee, the member will not be able to participate until the balance due is paid. If there are signed sponsor letters amounting to the tour fee balance due, that will be accepted as payment.
Additionally, the following items MUST be bought from the corps: new black marching shoes, a Corps T-shirt to be worn under the uniform, black gloves (for horn players). Color Guard and Pit members may require other personal items for their uniform, such as, special hats or tights.
The SPIRIT OF NEWARK/ NEW JERSEY strongly encourages parental and family involvement. This support is important not only to the individual member, but also to the entire corps. Members whose parents / family know the corps and understand the organization, member’s responsibilities, and scheduling, tend to more successfully complete the season. To help keep costs down, we are asking all parents to volunteer their services at a few rehearsals and/or camps.
WE NEED PARENTS AND ADULTS TO VOLUNTEER AS: cooks on trips and tour, to help move equipment on and off the field and the truck, carry water and refreshments for members at Parades, sew uniforms, flags, etc. We ask that you volunteer at least once this year. The Director, Mr. Harold Wright, will call.
Use of illegal drugs is strictly
forbidden and is considered grounds for dismissal. Use of alcohol and tobacco
is absolutely prohibited at any school that the corps might rehearse at,
sleepover in, or perform at.

Corps members must agree to meet their financial obligations to the organization before any equipment can be issued. Even though the SPIRIT OF NEWARK/NEW JERSEY monetary requirements are extremely reasonable and realistic, every member needs to understand the importance of paying fees on time.
In addition, because the SPIRIT OF NEWARK/NEW JERSEY utilizes Parades as FUND RAISERS, it is mandatory that members attend Parades (unless excused) or be required to find an alternative means of supplementing corps funding. (e.g., finding a sponsor who might donate money to have their name honored : a) $100 for a uniform, b) $200 for an instrument, c) $500 sponsor name on the side of the Equipment Truck, etc.)
The TOUR FEE for 2008 is $500, due by May 23 Camp. (See Tour Fees and Fundraising on page 5). If there is more than one member from a family, you still pay for only one member.
ALL REHEASAL FEES AND TOUR INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS ARE DUE BY THE DESIGNATED DATE OR THE MEMBER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIAPTE IN CORPS ACTIVITIES UNTIL PAYMENT IS SATISFIED.
All TOUR FEES MUST BE PAID BY MAY 23, 2008
There are various miscellaneous costs that the member should be aware of: marching shoes, corps T-shirt, gloves, etc (See page 5 – OTHER COSTS). Please be prepared.

Dear ______________________________________________________________________________,
My name is __________________________________________________________ and I am sending this letter to you to let you know that I am a proud member of the Spirit of Newark /New Jersey Drum and Bugle Corps. I have made it through the audition process and I am now rehearsing in preparation for our 2008 competitive season. We are a member of Drum Corps International and we tour and compete throughout the country during the summer months. The experience I am preparing for is truly a life building one.
If you are not familiar with our organization and the activity in which we are involved, I would like to take just a minute of your time to tell you a little about it. Spirit of Newark New Jersey is a 501c3 non-profit musical organization with over 75 musicians and dance performers between the ages of 14 and 21, who come from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and surrounding states as far away as Virginia. We are interested in furthering our musical and performance education and Spirit of Newark New Jersey is providing us this opportunity.
Our drum corps was started in 1991 and continues to be a model of excellence in youth programming representing the City of Newark all over the country, and I am proud to be part of this special group of people. Being a member of Spirit of Newark New Jersey will allow me the opportunity to receive instruction from some of the top music educators in the country, tour the United States, and perform in front of tens of thousands of people this summer.
Of course, being part of such an organization does not come free, and that is one of the reasons I am writing this letter to you. Each member of the corps is required to raise $500 for touring fees. These fees cover all our food, transportation, and housing as we go on tour to Indianapolis In. We will travel approximately 2500 miles this summer. It also helps to cover the cost of our uniforms, instruments, and nine months of music and dance instruction.
Spirit of Newark /New Jersey has established this individual sponsorship program for its members. I would really appreciate any assistance that you may be able to provide. I am not asking for $500. All I am asking for is a small amount to help me achieve my goal. Will you help me and give me the opportunity to travel around the country and perform in front of tens of thousands of people?
Please use the bottom portion of this letter to make your contribution.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and support.
Sincerely,
Spirit of Newark New Jersey Member
